YSlow Is Out!

While I was at the Web 2.0 Expo, I attented a Yahoo! session where they presented a Firebug extension called YSlow. Obviously, you won’t be able to get an A right away, but it’s a very good tool to improve the performance of your sites.

The PHP5 Certificate

Marc-Antoine Ross July 27th, 2007 Add comment

I’ve been offline for a little while, I agree. I came back from one month of travel in France and Spain. That was just great, really. Now, I’m on a new project, new partner, new ideas, new budgets, new excitement. We will be focusing on Web 2.0, Voip and Mobile, isn’t that great? I’ll post more details in the coming weeks.

I thought posting the PHP5 Certificate for those who haven’t seen it yet. So far I know only 2 of my class who passed the certification, any others?

Montreal 2.0 San Francisco

I’d give a 4/10 to Air Canada today. I was very pleased that the planed pushed back from the gate a few minutes earlier than supposed, which is unusual. We unfortunately went right back to the gate: the engine’s starter blew off. After 2 hours waiting in the plane, we finally pushed back and took off. The flight attendants were nice, but didn’t offer anything to accommodate us for those 2 hours of delay.

I arrived in San Francisco and everything went very well from there. Went to check-in my room at the W, worked a bit, went shopping and ended up in the lobby of the W to work/drink/eat.

Web 2.0 Expo

The Web 2.0 Expo is not even started and I’ve already met the folks at Netvibes: Franck, product manager, François, Developer and Tariq, CEO. I had a very interesting conversation with them. I didn’t even know Netvibes was a French company! They will be announcing Netvibes Universe on Monday. I haven’t been able to learn much about it, but it will apparently generate new revenues for the company, I’m expecting it will generate revenues for the users as well. I’ll follow-up on that after their press release. This would probably help Netvibes continue its growth, which seemed to have slowed down a bit in the last months, looking at their Alexa ranking.

Tomorrow is the workshops day. I didn’t decide which sessions I will attend yet. What do you think?

2 for 1 on PHP5 Zend Certification

Both Rico and I successfully passed the PHP5 Certification exam last week. Congratulations Rico. Over 66% of the DevTaxi crew is now a PHP5 Zend Certified Engineer! Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait quite a bit for Mario to pass the exam, I know he is very very busy with his web startup: www.foetus.ca. Busy is good Mario!

XHTML: Open a link in a new window - V2

I used my friend Mario’s great post on how-to open a link in a new window to create a script that will open any external link in a new window without the need to add a CSS class to it. This is very useful when you want to change the behavior on a blog that already has a lot of posts. (more…)

Web Users Statistics and Trends

Mario Laflamme July 3rd, 2006 Add comment

Before conceiving and developing a website, it’s important to know the most used technologies on Internet. Therefore, I regularly consult the statistics of W3 Schools which indicate the monthly evolution concerning the use of the browsers, operating systems, resolutions and other technologies.

But, be aware…

[…] Global averages may not always be relevant to your web site. Different sites attract different audiences. Some web sites attract professional developers using professional hardware, other sites attract hobbyists using older low spec computers […]
