About Rico Nagtalon

Among the drivers here at DevTaxi, I would say I'm the noob. I started serious web development in the early part of 2005. I've learned a lot since then, but I admit that I still have much to learn.

Before that time, web programming was all just fun for me. A little JavaScript here, a simple Java applet there. Then through a fortuitous turn of events, I ended up becoming a web developer. I then had the pleasure of working with Marc, who gave practical advice and quickly taught me a lot of nifty techniques and the importance of sticking to standards. Shortly thereafter, I got a glimpse of Mario's awesome graphical design skills, and then I found out he was quite the PHP coder. I indeed felt a bit small standing next to these two, but that only pushed me to try to learn from them as best I can.

I hope to be able to chronicle my journey from a casual to a relatively serious web developer, and if you're the relative beginner like myself, I hope you find it a good read.

Easy FTP Scripting in Linux

Ever had the need to transfer files through a cron job in a Linux system? Maybe you need to download some rotated logs for archiving? Or upload some files at a given point in time?

Making a Linux shell script do FTP can actually be quite painless. And it works even if the remote host isn’t *nix (Windows, for example). (more…)

Here we go!

I consider it an honor to be part of the DevTaxi team. Marc and Mario have been in web development far longer than I have (they were doing server-side scripting when I was still ecstatic from having learned JavaScript image-swapping). Read what they write! Between the two of them, they have close to 20 years of development experience and have come up with some pretty spiffy stuff. I feel privileged to be writing side-by-side with such seasoned coders. (more…)
